God Talk 101: Called to Question

'What has Athens to do with Jerusalem?' Tertullian asked. What has critical thinking to do with religious faith? Not a thing, he thundered. But that's not true for some of us: we belong to an equally ancient tradition of believers who have always struggled to reconcile what we know intellectually with what we have experienced spiritually. Like Jacob, we are called to wrestle with God and to find ourselves blessed by that encounter. After all, Jacob's new name, Israel, is a pun that translates literally as both 'struggles with God' and 'may God prevail.'

From September 2007 through May of 2008, LaSallers and their friends will gather once a month on second Wednesday evenings to read and discuss a book or book-excerpt that raises fundamental questions about the meaning and the possibility of faith. We will wrestle first hand with the hard questions, the big questions, the skeptical questions about Christianity and about religion generally. We will ask the edgy postmodern questions about power, truth, subjectivity, and language. Discussion will be facilitated by Cate Wallace, a literature PhD and award-winning teacher who can make the readings both accessible and personally relevant. (For more about Cate, check her author website, CatherineMWallace.com). A full course outline is posted in the downloads section of the church website. It's called 'God Talk Syllabus'.

A course blog will offer both ongoing conversation and short, useful introductions to the readings (www.GodTalk101.blogspot.com). A course outline and some of these reading guides are already up on the blog. Once the class gets started, the blog will be password protected and open only to participants.

The first class meets 6-8 pm on September 12; bring your dinner. While people eat, Cate will do a quick overview of the readings to get discussion started. No class in December.

Please feel free to call Cate with questions or just to talk: 847-673-4807, 8 am. to 8 pm.
