Introducing Sonya & Rev. Luther
Greetings Beloved Church! I want to give a bit of a worship update with you and share some information about two of our part-time Worship Leaders who we are honored to have joining us this season. Rev.Dr. Luther Young and Minister Sonya Blakey are both extremely multi-talented leaders in their own rights, who are graciously adding onto their other ministry roles in order to spend time with us roughly once a month at LaSalle. I am so thankful for each of their unique gift sets, their musical and spiritual skills, and for the ways that Rob Wildeboer as our Music Coord/Artist, and our other LaSalle lay leaders and musicians, all together are making this a rich and diverse time for growing our musical capacity at church.
And remember - you too can be part of shaping our musical common life! If you can sing, play, or create art/liturgy/worship in any way, reach out to Rob or me and we'll figure out how to get you connected. There will also continue to be Studio Sessions to practice every other Tuesday night that Rob leads, Hymn Sings after Sabbath Sundays that Chuck Hogren leads, and seasonal choir rehearsals and gatherings as time and interest allows (PS - plan ahead now to join rehearsal for the Easter Choir March 22 and 29!) My deep thanks to all who help create such beautiful, creative, and faithful spaces when we gather together in worship - I am looking forward to how we keep expanding our worship together! Below you can read more about both of our worship leaders. - RevLiz
Sonya Blakey is a familiar and trusted voice in Chicago gospel media. Sonya has spent more than 20 years in radio and currently serves as Program Director and morning show host on Inspiration 1390, while also hosting the Sunday gospel program Get Your Praise On on V103. She brings warmth, joy, and a deep love for gospel music, and we’re grateful for the energy and encouragement she shares with our congregation whenever she leads worship with us.
Rev. Dr. Luther Young, Jr. is an ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), an artist, public theologian, and social justice advocate who serves as Assistant Professor of Religion and Society at Boston University School of Theology and Pastor of Worship and Spiritual Formation at Lighthouse Church of Chicago. He brings a thoughtful, grounded spirit to worship, and we’re grateful for the wisdom, care, and leadership he shares with our congregation.
